Dog lays in ditch after getting hit by car

I was walking out the door to mow the backyard on Saturday afternoon when the phone rang. So I paused in the doorway to see if the caller would leave a message. It was Andi. She and her husband were out on their motorcycle. They passed a woman standing in the ditch along the highway looking at a dog laying at her feet. Concerned that the lady may need some help, they stopped.

The lady was heading to her mom's house from out of town. As she was driving down the highway (a two-lane highway), she noticed a dog laying in the ditch raise it's head. Pretty amazing seeing as the dog is brown and black and without that movement might not have even been noticed. She brought him water and dog food from her car (funny how many people have water and food in their cars most of the time) and he drank and ate like crazy but would not get up.

Replanting the Rainforest (p3)

Can we replant the planet's rainforests?

Rainforest Reforestation Efforts

Reforestation efforts are sprouting up all around the world. Numerous conservation groups are working to preserve, enlarge and connect the world's rainforests. Let's take a closer look at some of those projects.

Rwanda's government and various ecological groups are paying special attention to the Gishwati Forest Reserve. Once a vast rainforest, activities such as deforestation and refugee resettlement reduced it to a fraction of its original size around the turn of the century [source: Science Daily]. Since then, reforestation has somewhat increased the size of the forest, but it remains a sliver of its original size.

Send a FREE email postcard

I have added a function for sending free email postcards from the Will Work for Dog Food.org website. There are several photos to choose from for your postcard and I will be adding more. Just click on the photo you want to use on your postcard. This opens a new window with a form. Just fill out the form — your name and email address (so people can reply to your email), the email addresses of your recipients, a subject for your email and a message, then you can preview it and send it. It’s just that simple. You can email the postcard to five people at a time. This keeps the load down on my web server. So stop by and see the postcard choices… and remember to check back to see new designs as they are added.

Do you remember Spin Art?

Do you remember the little plastic Spin Art machine? And the tubes of paint? And the white cards? Well, I have found a way to create Spin Art using my computer which I now call my SpinArt Machine. And the images come out with such great colors. To follow is a photo of my dear Charley Tan the Man run through my SpinArt Machine. Looks pretty cool, huh?

Joshua wants to be scratched

Joshua Michael Bodean has recently decided that being scratched is a good thing… maybe better than rubbing against the trunk of a tree.
Ordinarily, this would not seem like a big thing, but you have to understand Joshua. On April Fool’s Day, Josh will be 5 years old. He was born five years ago just off the side of the road in a lot some folks from Houston had given me permission to feed his mom on. She and another female dog appeared near there one day. At first meeting, you might think his mom was extremely abused from all the scars on her body and her fear of people. But over time, I have come to believe that she is a feral dog and has always been on her own; that her scars are proof that she has been in some rather nasty dog fights. She has a torn nose, ripped ear and a few hairless scars on her back end. She has known me for more than five years and I still cannot touch her.
A couple days after Sister (that’s Josh’s mom) gave birth, I trapped her in a small cage and moved them all to the vet for a quick checkup, and then to my house. I just wish I knew she would have fallen for fried chicken sooner… like before she got pregnant.
Anyway, in the past few weeks as I am cleaning up the yard, Josh kind of lingers closer and closer. One day while I was leaning over, he came up close. So I reached out my arm and started scratching his throat and chest. I could tell from the look on his face that he was thinking it felt good, but I could also see that he was very nervous to be that close. Just then, JoJo — one of his sisters — came up and all was okay. This behavior is repeated almost every day now in the morning and in the evening when I am cleaning up the yard.
Five years… it has taken him almost five years to reach this point. Aside from his mom, he is the last one to be touched. Next thing you know, he’ll come in the house.
Here’s a baby photo of Josh after I brought him home.
